Hi Friends & Family
Just to let you know we have all arrived safely and are slowly getting our new life here organised.
The 8 hour flight from Heathrow to Chicago went quite quickly on Wednesday. There was a bit of turbulance on the descent (Chicago is known as 'the windy city') and I ended up feeling sick, but after sitting waiting 1 1/2 hours to be processed at immigration, my head and tummy had calmed down! Daphne travelled well, except for chewing her bedding and a bit of the roof of her travel crate. She was in there for about 11 hours and did not sick or pee or poo, good girl! At Chicago we picked up a Toyota Rav 4 which had a sat nav called 'NeverLost' and drove 60 miles to a Super 8 Motel in DeKalb, Illinois, which is apparently famous for inventing barbed wire and improving the DNA of corn on the cob.
Thursday morning we purchased a mobile phone (001) 515 450 2784. We then drove about 4 1/2 hours to Ames, collected the key to the bedsit - address is 4810 Mortensen Road, Unit 111, Ames, IA 50014-5543, USA, and then rushed off to buy a bed and some sheets and pillows!! We have been busy running around Ames organising our new life - changing the hire car to a Chevrolet Aveo (cheaper!), getting a bank account, about 7 trips to Wal-Mart and Target to get necessities for the bedsit (most importantly a kettle, as I desperately needed a cup of tea!!) We got lost several times on Friday trying to find the post office as the new hire car does not have sat nav, but we are getting a bit more orientated now.
Alan starts his new job on Monday at the US Dept of Agriculture. We had lunch with Alan's boss (Eric) and his wife (Dee) in a Japanese restaurant on Friday. It was the first time we had met after many emails and telephone calls. They are very nice people, have a boxer dog called Lucy, and Eric looks as if he could be Alan's older brother - which was a bit spooky when we first met! They very kindly left us a welcome package in the bedsit of all sorts of useful items such as beer, dog food, crisps and toilet roll to name but a few.
It was about 78F lovely and warm and sunny on Friday. Saturday and today we have had torrential rain, thunder and lightning, which is freaking Daphne out at the moment, but she will get used to it eventually I'm sure, as apparently, it's no stranger in these parts!!
That's all for now folks.
Love from Rachel & Alan & Daphne xx
